Luiz De Melo is the Micro Main Event Champion ($148,985); Kim Heidemann Takes Runner Up for $104,299

Sep 1, 2020

There have been more than the usual number of coolers and outdraws during this final but arguably, the last hand of all is the one that was cruellest. Both players got the chips in preflop with ace-jack off-suit and it was all looking good for the standard chop with Kim Heidemann holding Diamond AClub J and Luiz De Melo with Spade AHeart J on the Spade 6Spade QClub 2 flop.

The turn, yes you’ve guessed it, brought a third spade, and both James Dempsey and Ludo Geilich were sweating along with Heidemann on the Spade 5 turn. “Oh my word…surely not” said Dempsey, as Geilich added “if this happens, that’s nasty” right before the Spade 7 fell on the river. Both commentators were equally horrified and sympathetic to Heidemann’s fate.

It is undoubtedly a hand that they will remember for a very long time, but at least Heidemann will be able to console themselves with the six-figure payday heading their way.

Though the conclusion was both dramatic and fortunate for De Melo, a huge congratulations go out to the Brazilian for their fantastic performance and for becoming the latest WPT title-holder!
