Squeaky: "I Don't Care How Good These Guys Are. You Can't Beat Luck."

Apr 29, 2011

After an ace-high flop, two players check, Michael "Squeaky" Winnett bets, one player folds, and the other player calls. The turn card pairs the board with another ace, and both players check.

The river card is a 5, Winnett checks, his opponent bets, and Winnett calls. The player shows A-J for trip aces, but Winnett shows 5-5 for a full house on the river (fives full of aces). Even with the come-from-behind victory, Winnett is much more subdued than he has been earlier in the tournament.

A few minutes later, Winnett’s friend Elio Cabrera makes a full house to suck out against — and eliminate — Chris Klodnicki. (The details of that hand can be found in a separate update below this one.) Cabrera gives a brief shout of celebration, and Winnett goes over to see what happened.

Cabrera looks at Winnett and says, "It’s gonna be you and me, heads up!"

Winnett sums up his deep run in this tournament with one of the best poker quotes of all time: "You can’t beat luck! I don’t care how good these guys are, you can’t beat luck!"
