Vandeven Shove Bedevils Gold Into Fold

Nov 10, 2014

Erik Christensen opens for 20,000 from middle position, Harvey Vandeven calls from a seat over, and Jamie Gold calls as well from the small blind. The flop comes [Qh][Jh][7c], and after Gold leads with a bet only Vandeven sticks around.

The turn is the [10h]. Gold fires again, this time 80,000, and Vandeven promptly announces he’s all in.

"Holy crap!" Gold says as he sits straight up in his chair with an expression of amazement. "I have a straight and a flush draw," he adds, eventually adding that his straight is king-high. "I know you have ace-king," he continues. "I can’t put you on any hand that doesn’t beat me."

Gold continues to wonder aloud about the situation, standing up as he talks. Eventually he folds his hand face up — [Kh][9s] — and waits to see if Vandeven is going to show. When he doesn’t do so right away, Gold leans forward.

"You’re not going to show?" he asks, arms outstretched. Then Vandeven turns over one of his cards — the [7d].

The table reacts with a loud "ooooh!" and with a wide grin Gold congratulates Vandeven on the hand. Vandeven has about 745,000 now, while Gold is at 550,000.
