"Winning is Good, But Repeating Is Where It Is At"

Dec 10, 2011

As James Dempsey and Vanessa Selbst spar in Hand #88, Tournament Director Jack McClelland gets on the mic to inform the audience that Antonio Esfandiari has the potential to make WPT history.

After he fills in the rail that Esfandiari could possibly become the first player to win the same event twice, McClelland adds, "As Stuey Ungar once said, ‘Winning is good, but repeating is where it is at.’"

Esfandiari waits for McClelland to turn the mic off before he tells him, "Jack, I did not hear a word you just said," referring to the fact that the loud volume of the mic often makes it difficult to understand what the tournament staff is saying.  McClelland keeps the mic off and repeats what he said to Esfandiari.

Esfandiari is skeptically, asking, "If no one has ever done it, how would he know?"  McClelland explains to Esfandiari that Ungar won the WSOP Main Event twice.

Andrew Lichtenberger chimes in, telling Esfandiari, "Ask Vanessa what it feels like to repeat."

Esfandiari looks surprised.  "What id you repeat? An EPT?"  Selbst explains that she won the NAPT Mohegan Sun Main Event twice.

"Obviously I don’t follow poker at all," Esfandiari replies.
