Most sports fields are about one hectare in size. Imagine a football field on fire. Now times that by 10 million football fields.
That is what is happening in Australia.
Fires have been raging across my beautiful country for months, destroying more than 10 million hectares of land, burning thousands of homes and killing at least 28 people.
But the extraordinary statistic that eats me up the most is the one billion animals to have died so far in the most outrageous fire disaster our nation has ever had.
I just cannot comprehend that figure.
Our precious koala was already an at-risk species. Now, it is believed one third of their entire population has been wiped out. A devastating hit to their existence. Rehabilitation for the lucky ones is expensive and lengthy, but more necessary right now than ever before.
The generosity I’ve witnessed from the poker community during times of need has been extraordinary. Now, my country needs some of that kindness.
I’m calling out to poker players all over the world to please help me raise money for Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. Opened by Steve and Terri Irwin in 2008, the hospital operates year-round, treating thousands of animals every year. I’ve been there myself and seen first-hand the priceless work they do. Recently, the hospital treated its 90,000th patient! Now, they are inundated with bushfire victims.
At the time of writing this, our fundraiser on facebook is up to a whopping AU$73,000 and we’re still going strong. EVERY dollar helps. It’s going to take months to get the fires under control, and years to recover.
Let’s show the world just how generous our wonderful poker-playing community is.
From the koalas, kangaroos, echidnas, flying foxes, wallabies, platypuses, wombats and countless other Australian wildlife in need, THANK YOU for your support!
