Elias Wins WPT Caribbean Main Event, Becoming First Player to Win Back-to-Back WPT Main Events in Same Season
On Friday, Darren Elias overcame a four-to-one chip disadvantage to defeat Christophe Rosso heads up and win the WPT Caribbean Main Event at the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort and Casino Royale in St. Maarten. Elias, winner of the WPT Borgata Poker Open Main Event in September, earned $127,680 and is the first player to ever win back-to-back WPT Main Events in the same season.
In 2012, Marvin Rettenmaier became the first player to ever win back-to-back WPT events, winning the Season X WPT World Championship and the Season XI WPT Merit Cyprus Classic.
In addition, Elias becomes the first player to win multiple WPT Main Events in the same season since Season III. Both Tuan Le and Daniel Negreanu won a pair of events in Season III, and Negreanu was crowned WPT Player of the Year.
Elias has a commanding lead in the Season XIII Player of the Year race with 803.04 points, but there are still many more WPT Main Tour and National events scheduled over the next several months.
Rosso was unable to seal the deal at the final table of the WPT Caribbean Main Event, entering the last day of play with an overwhelming chip lead, and earned $64,900 for his efforts. WPT Champions Club member Mike Linster also reached the final table, exiting in fourth place.
