Peter Olsen must be doing something right. The Danish player won his entry to the WPT National Series Madrid through a qualifier on PartyPoker.com and then parlayed that victory into €60,000 and a WPT National title. Not too shabby at all – especially for someone playing in his first-ever live tournament.

The eight-player final table quickly became short-handed as Olsen found himself in the final four. Raul Mestre, eager to win the title for his home country, dispatched Swedish player Alex Stevic in fourth place and Portugal’s Rosa Maria Islas Rodriguez in third to take the chip lead into his heads-up battle with Olsen.

Olsen didn’t stay down for long, however, taking a number of pots off Mestre to take control of the match. Olsen’s luck continued to the tournament’s final hand where, on a board of 10d, 4c, Qs, 7s, 5c, his Kh 5c connected on the river to best Mestre’s Kc Jc.
