WPT Australia Season XVIII

Los Angeles, CA (March 3, 2020) – World Poker Tour® today announced three new WPT® festivals to take place in Australia at The Star Gold Coast. WPT returns to Australia for the second time in Season XVIII when the $1,500 buy-in WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast takes place from April 30-May 4, 2020.

Come Season XIX, the second annual WPT Australia festival will commence on September 24, 2020 with the AUD $1,100 buy-in WPTDeepStacks™ Australia kicking off, and will be followed by the AUD $5,400 buy-in WPT Australia Main Event on October 2.

The WPT Australia Main Event marks the first-ever WPT Main Tour event in Australia and the second WPT Main Tour stop in the Asia-Pacific region in Season XIX. WPT Cambodia starts the campaign in July 2020.

These events follow-up the first trip for the World Poker Tour to Australia earlier in Season XVIII, when 658 entries created a whopping prize pool of AUD $1.48 million. Hari Varma won the event for AUD $274,247 ($185,693) and earned points toward the WPT Asia-Pacific Player of the Year race.

To top off the Season XIX schedule, The Star Gold Coast will host WPTDeepStacks for the WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast festival that will take place from April 23-May 3, 2021. The WPTDeepStacks Main Event will take place from April 29-May 3 and features a $1,500 buy-in.

“The Star Gold Coast and the nation of Australia warmly welcomes back the WPT for WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast and the rapidly approaching WPT Australia festival,” said Jess Mellor, COO, The Star Gold Coast. “Last year’s event showed the poker world that The Star Gold Coast is a must-attend poker destination and we look forward to showcasing our property to more players from around the globe.”

Angelica Hael, VP of Global Tour Management for the World Poker Tour, added, “The World Poker Tour’s relationship with The Star Gold Coast continues to blossom and these three festivals will only add more reasons for our loyal players to visit this poker hotbed. It brings me great joy to see poker continue to thrive in my native country and bring the WPT Champions Cup to Australia in Season XIX.”

About The Star Gold Coast

Significant new food and beverage offerings, 596 refurbished hotel rooms, refurbished meeting rooms and Event Centre, a stylish new Events Lawn, and a luxury poolside experience at The Star Grand complemented the centrepiece of the $850 million transformation, the new luxury suite hotel, The Darling, and rooftop venue, Nineteen at The Star.

Construction is now well underway on The Star’s new A$400 million mixed-use hotel and residential tower with world-class resort facilities and amenities that will see the internationally acclaimed Dorsett hotel brand introduced to Australia in 2022. As works progress on the Dorsett hotel tower, The Star has also unveiled plans for a further capital works project which could commence in 2020. At 215-metres tall, an additional mixed-used tower is proposed to include a five-star international hotel, apartments, a nightlife venue, new food and beverage experiences and resort facilities.

The latest tower plans are part of a $2 billion-plus masterplan for The Star Gold Coast, approved in November 2018 by the Queensland Government, which will see a total of five towers on Broadbeach Island, alongside the original The Star Grand hotel and The Darling, which opened in 2018.The masterplan involves a partnership with Hong Kong based conglomerates, Chow Tai Fook and Far East Consortium, to deliver hotels, apartments, resort facilities, entertainment options and tourism attractions.
