There are few things as fun, dramatic, and thrilling as watching players compete for millions of dollars on the World Poker Tour. But let’s be honest – when it comes right down to it, playing for a shot at fame and fortune is a whole lot more entertaining than watching other people chase their dreams on TV.

So, if you’re itching to get in the game, we suggest you check out the World Poker Tour Amateur Poker League where you can find free poker games filled with great players – and huge prizes – right in your hometown.

Don’t believe us? Then check out this interview with current World Poker Tour APL World Champion Laura Abeyta Martinez who recently defeated a field filled with the best amateur players from around the country to win a $10K seat into any World Poker Tour Main Event she wants to play in Season XI.

How long have you been playing poker?

I have been playing since January 2010 when I played my first game and took second place. My ex-boyfriend signed me up to play a game without me knowing and I told him I didn’t know how to play. He taught me how to play and he encouraged me, and said that I knew enough and that I could do it. I ended up taking second place that night, and took him out of the game! Of course, he wasn’t expecting that! I thought it was funny.

What got you involved in poker?

My ex-boyfriend got me involved and taught me how to play. I would also stand behind him and watch him play heads up, so I can definitely play heads up thanks to him. Our fellow league players would call us the Poker God and Goddess. I found World Poker Tour APL at a venue by my house and the rest is history.

Have you made any decisions on how to use your $10K seat?

No, I haven’t totally decided, but I do know that I would like to play one game at the Isle of Capri when WPT comes to Blackhawk Colorado.

Were there any specific moments in the WPT Amateur Championship (WPTAC) that were most memorable for you or that you were most proud of?

My most memorable moment of the 2012 WPTAC was finding out that I finished the second day as chip leader and then went into final day and won the game!

How has your win affected your notoriety in your home town? Do the local players treat you different?

Yes, one of the venues took pictures of me and posted them on their website and did a small write up on me. I do get a lot of people congratulating me and some of my fellow league players tease me and ask me if I am riding around town with the big white 10K cardboard[check] in the back of my car so I can show it off to everyone.

Are you looking forward to defending your title in Vegas at the 2013 WPTAC?

I am definitely looking forward to defending my title in Vegas at the 2013 WPTAC and can’t wait!!!

Instead of dreaming about what it would be like to play in an event like the WPT LA Poker Classic – airing this Sunday at 8pm and 11pm local time on FSN – follow Laura’s example and get out there and compete for your $10K World Poker Tour tournament entry by playing in World Poker Tour APL events near you.
