Poker players in Australia will soon descend upon The Star Sydney for a WPTDeepStacks event.

WPTDeepStacks returns to Australia for only the second time in the tour’s history for an AU$1,500 main event from April 7-11 at The Star Sydney. One of Australia’s most famous cities plays host to its first ever WPT-branded event with an 11-event series that runs from March 30 through April 11.

It’s the first of three WPT events scheduled for Australia in 2022.

“Poker players in Australia have always been passionate about the game and the partnership with The Star Entertainment Group allows us to expand our presence there,” said Adam Pliska, WPT CEO. “Hosting the first WPT event at The Star Sydney puts us front and center in the largest poker market in Australia, one of the most iconic cities of the world, adding another element to our 20th anniversary celebration.”

The WPTDeepStacks Sydney main event features three starting days. On Thursday, April 7 (Day 1A) and Friday, April 8 (Day 1B), play kicks off at 2:30 p.m. local time. On Saturday, April 9 (Day 1C), cards go into the air at 12:30 p.m. local time. Players will receive a 30,000-chip starting stack, and registration will remain open on all three starting days through the start of Level 7. Levels will be 40 minutes long on Day 1, 60 minutes for Day 2 and Day 3, and 30 minutes long once the tournament reaches heads up play.

The field will combine on April 10, and a WPTDeepStacks champion will be crowned on April 11.

The tournament series features buy-ins ranging from AU$175 satellites to a AU$5,000 challenge event to close out the series. In addition to satellite tournaments into the WPTDeepStacks main event and a variety of other No Limit Hold’em offerings at different buy-in levels, there is also a Pot Limit Omaha tournament on the schedule.

Star Sydney, which opened in November 1997, has a 34-table poker room, which offers cash games and daily tournaments. Star Sydney also features electronic slot machines and an array of traditional table games on its gaming floor.

Accommodations at Star Sydney include The Darling, Sydney’s only Forbes five star boutique hotel and urban resort, Star Grand Hotel and Star Grand Residences. Guests can also enjoy The Darling Spa, as well as several top restaurants and bars on property, including The Century, an iconic Cantonese restaurant.

Star Sydney is located on the water in close proximity to the iconic Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, among many other local attractions within walking distance.

The inaugural WPTDeepStacks event in Australia took place further north up Australia’s eastern coast, at The Star Gold Coast in May 2021. The kickoff event to Season VII of the WPTDeepStacks tour drew 1,113 entries and generated a prizepool of over AU$1.5 million.

England’s William Davies won the tournament and the AU$252,731 first-place prize. Notable local pro Alex Lynskey finished third for AU$114,960.

The Star Gold Coast will play host to two additional WPT events in 2022 — a return of WPTDeepStacks, and the first ever WPT Main Tour on Australian soil.

“I could not be more excited to be bringing a Main Tour stop to my home country,” said Angelica Hael, WPT VP of Global Tour Management. “I look forward to greeting every single one of my fellow Aussies at the event and welcoming the world to an amazing host property, The Star.”

Each event will be livestreamed and broadcast globally on WPT.com and the WPT YouTube and Twitch channels.
