SalsbergWith just four events left before the WPT World Championship at Bellagio, the WPT Player of the Year race couldn’t be any tighter.

Matt Salsberg and Paul Volpe are tied at the top of the leader board with 2,350 points each, while Paul Klann (1,800 points), Antonio Esfandiari, and Marvin Rettenmaier (1,500 points each) are all within striking distance of the title.

Salsberg, who will be playing the bwin.es WPT Barcelona tournament starting Friday, has a chance to distance himself from the pack if he can put together another deep run like his recent seventh-place finish at the Gioco Digitale WPT Venice Grand Prix. Volpe, meanwhile, won’t be returning to the tour until the start of the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Showdown on April 11.

If neither player scores any more points before the end of the season, the WPT Player of the Year title will be settled by a tie-breaker based on which player has earned the most money on tour during the season. At the moment, Volpe holds the lead in this category, having earned nearly $1.1 million so far in Season XI, while Salsberg has amassed a not-insignificant $750,000.
