Getting to know Malta

The history of Malta is a colorful one and dates back over 5,000 years ago. Civilizations such as the Romans left their traces on the Islands, and it has been reported that in 60 A.D. St. Paul was shipwrecked on the island while on his way to Rome and with it brought the religion of Christianity to Malta.

Malta was formerly an extension of Sicily,  but during the 17th and 18th century the island became a crucial player in the changing cultures across Europe and inspired many artists to create churches and palaces in honor of the architecture.

Malta was under British rule until 1964 until ultimately the Island became independent. Modern Malta became a Republic in 1974 and joined the European Union in May 2004, before adopting the Euro currency in 2008. Since then, Malta has become home to head offices of many gambling institutions, and more recently, many professional poker players.

Despite being one of the smallest countries in the world, present-day Malta is well-known for its fishing markets, scenic beaches, and traditional cuisine. The average temperature for Malta in April is 20° Celcius so make sure you prepare for an off day from the poker to relax at the beach.

Malta Facts:

  • The Republic of Malta is made up of a group of seven islands. Malta itself is the largest followed by Gozo.
  • Valletta, the country’s capital, is home to almost 199,000 people which is nearly half Malta’s entire population!
  • English is spoken by almost 90% of the population.
  • Over 1.6 million tourists come to visit Malta each year.
  • Malta is often a go-to place for film directors looking for the perfect scenic areas for big money productions such as Gladiator and the TV series, Game of Thrones, being filmed on the Island.
